Some say the Capverdian Islands will either leave you cold or will fascinate you for the rest of your life. When I first set foot on the archipelago in 1997 I knew I was hooked.

Meanwhile my photo-documentation of the country has become the most comprehensive of my entire work. I have returned to the islands every year, choosing two or three at a time, and throughout the years my fascination has not diminished. On the contrary, it has grown and got me to visit Capverdian communities in the US, in Belgium and Holland and to participate in their activities here in Switzerland where I live.

In my photographic work I am mainly concerned with people and Capverdians have a lot to offer. Their openness, vitality and playfulness will win you quickly, their music and dance will want you to join in. It should not be surprising that many of the pictures revolve around music, for it is in music that the soul of a Creol becomes most visible. And it was music also that has helped the people of the islands to survive the direst poverty for centuries.
